The EU URBACT initiative for Integrated Urban Development

The EU URBACT initiative is similar to the PASCAL EcCoWell initiative is aiming to move beyond a world of silos to integrated urban development. People inbvolved in the PASCAL EcCoWell Network, which is led by the city of Cork, will find much of interest on the URBACT web site http://urbact.eu. This includes papers on "Combing horizontal and vertical integratio" and on a Trople Helox approach based around an interesting model.

The city of Cork has contributed much in elaborating and testing EcCoWell ideas shaped by PASCAL in 2012.

Asia Pacific Cities Summit

Brisbane will host the 2015 Asia Pacific Summit and Mayors'Forum from 5-8 July. Since the Summit was initiated by Brisbane in 1996 over 8,000 delegates have participated from more than 400 cities. The Summit alternates between Brisbane, which hosts every second summit, and selected cities in the Asia-Pacific region. The 2015 Summit will discuss critical issues in 4 thematic areas : Global Cities, Digital Cities, Future Cities, and Cities for People. Keynote speakers include Sebastian Coe (who organised the recent London Olympic Games), Randi Zuckerberg, Sy Lau, and Tyler Brule.

American Cities of Learning

A network of American Cities of Learning has emerged in the US with initiatives in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Washington, Dallas, and Los Angeles. While Cities of Learning have much in common with Learning Cities they have a focus on youth rather than the whole lifecycle in most Learning Cities.

LCN Inclusion Rolling Workshops

The Rolling Workshop approach which has been successfully applied by the Harnessing Cultural Policy Network will now be applied by the LCN's Inclusion Network with an Inclusion Rolling Workshop which commenced in Townsville on 4 May. The Townsville Workshop will be followed by workshops in Glasgow (early July), Bristol (15 October), and Melbourne (2 December).

Towards Habitat 111 in 2016

The Third UN Habitat conference will be held in 2016 following the initial two Habitat copnferences in Vancouver (1976) and Istanbul (1996). Habitat 111 will be the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development.  Habitat 111 will also be one of the first global conferences in the Post 2015 Development Agenda and is seen as generating a "new Urban Agenda" in the present context of constant change.

The Neighbouthood Plazas of New York

The New York Department of Transport is building pedestrian plazas across New York in partnerhip with the Horti8cultural Society of New York. The NPP began in 2013 with DOT identifying places where pedestrian plazas could be built Once DOT has created a plaza it is handed over to the community based Horticultural Society to maintain it. There are now more than 71 Neighbourhood Plazas in New York from Times Square to Ozone Park.

Korean survey of participation in lifelong learning

The Korean National Institute for Lifelong Education (NILE) has reported the results in its Newsletter Lifelong Learning in Korea oif a survey of participation in lifelong learninmg in Korea. The survey is carried out each year targetting adults from 25 to 64 years of age. With the ageing of the population the survey showed that the overall participation rate of 36.8% had decloned.

Climate Policy Info Hub launched

The Climate Policy Info Hub has been launched as an online knowledge platform that provides information on climate policy options at international and EU levels easily accessible. The Info Hub is the outcome of the EU funded POLIMP project and was elaborated by a group of independent climate policy researchers and by a Dutch organisation Joint Implementation Network. The concept, design, and content of the Hub were provided by the Ecological Institute in Berlin. Articles will be provided in coming months to give a knowledge platform for consideration of EU and UN level policy options.

Third Annual Future of Places Conference June29-July1

The Third Annual Future of Places Conference will be held in Stockholm on June 29-July1 co-hosted by the Project for Public Spaces, UN Habitat, and the Axson Johnson Foundation. Outcomes from the three annual conferences will feed into the United Nations global summit, Habitat III to be held in 2016.

New York based Project for Public spaces has promoted place-making around the world, at times with partners such as UN Habitat.. Place-making principles have been applied in many cities around the world such as Adelaide in Australia, as well as in New York.
