Towards Habitat 111 in 2016
The Third UN Habitat conference will be held in 2016 following the initial two Habitat copnferences in Vancouver (1976) and Istanbul (1996). Habitat 111 will be the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development. Habitat 111 will also be one of the first global conferences in the Post 2015 Development Agenda and is seen as generating a "new Urban Agenda" in the present context of constant change. Habitat 111 will be relevant to the movement to generate sustainable learning cities around the world.
PLace making ideas have been brought into the work of the UN Habitat agency through a partnership with the New York based Project for Public Spaces. This partnership is supported by the Swedish Ax:son Johnson Foundation with a Future of Places Conference in Stockholm on 29 June to 1 July supported by the three organisations a contribution to evolving ideas on the future of places. How learning city ideas fit into such an emerging urban agenda will require careful thought.
