MOU on Growing Lifelong Learning in Cork

On June 12th an historic MOU was signed by the Lord Mayor of Cork, representing the city council, the Presidents of University College Cork and the Cork Institut of Technology, and the chief executive of the Cork Education and Training Board to commit these organisations to work together in the development of Cork as a Learning City. The MOU continues the pattern of innovations in Cork in fostering the development of Cork as a Learning City.

Cork Healthy City progress

A report (featured below) from the co-ordinator of the Cork Healthy City initiative, Denise Cahill, to Cork City Council shows the progress that the Healthy City initiative has made since becoming a WHO Healthy City in January 2012. This has gone along with active participation in the Cork EcCoWell initiative directed at achieving a more holistic to city development.

Korean National Lifelong Learning Expo

The Korean Ministry of Education and the National Institute for Lifelong Long Learning have collaborated in organising the 4th National Lifelong Learning Expo which is being held on 4-6 September in Seoul. The Expo is held annually as a space for learners and lifelong learning institutions to come together and share their learning experiences.

Taipei Learning Neighbourhoods pilots

The Taipei Learning City has finalised their Learning Neighbourhood pilot projects with a two day workshop hosted by the Department of Education of Taipei City Government.The workshop reviewed the outcomes of initiatives in 115 communities over 6 years, and was distinctive with the second day of the workshop held in two communities so that the actual situation in these communitie could be observed by participants in the workshop.

Growth of smartphones in Africa : learning implications

There has been a rapid griwrh of mobile phones in Africa with the Observer newspaper in 2011 declaring in a headline that half of Africas one billion population has a mobile phone. A recent expert assessment concluded that half the population of Africa will have smartphones by 2017 stimulatedby rapidly falling prices.

This groth of mobile phones is being taken advantage of in a number of sectors.

PASCAL Learning Cities Networks Inclusion Workshops

Arrangements have now been made for further Inclusion Workshops to be conducted in Glasgow, Bristol, and Melbourne to follow the initial workshop held in Townsville last May.

Report of Pecs Rolling Workshop on Cultural Policies

The report of the Pecs Hungary Rolling Workshop on Cultural POlicies in Learning Cities is now available and is attached. The report, written by Terez Kleisz who co-ordinated the workshop, is the third in the series of workshops on Cultural Policies in Learning Cities and follows workshops held i Ostersund Sweden and Gkasgow earlier this year.

New open access research journal on the Science of Learning

The Nature Publishing Group and the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) have partnered to publish a new open access research journal on the Science of Learning. The journal will foster the merger of neuroscience with education which is seen as having great potential to contribute to advances in approaches to learning in many contexts The Deputy Director of the Queensland Brain Institute, Professor Pankaj Sah, has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the new journal.

UNESCO Entrepreneurship Education Network

UNESCO has set up a Entrepreneurship Education Network (EE-Net) to share ideas, promote discussions, and disseminate best practice and innovative approaches to Entrepreneurship Education. A number of UNESCO chairs of Entrepreneurship Education foster development in this area.Professor Xu Xiaozhou, Dean of Education in Zhejiang University Hangzhou holds a UNESCO Chair in this field and is a participant in the PASCAL Entrepreneurial Learning City Network.

The SEAMEO APEID Centre will hold a meeting on Entrepreneurship Education in Bangkok on 12-14 October this year

13th PASCAL International Conference to be held in Glasgow, 2016

The 13th PASCAL International Conference will be held at the University of Glasgow on 3-5 June, 2016. The conference will focus on future directions for Learning Cities at a time of significant challenge and opportunity for enterprising Learning Cities.
