SUEUAA Final Project Meeting and International Symposium and Workshop Report Harare, Zimbabwe, 8-10 May, 2019

The SUEUAA (Strengthening the Urban Engagement of Universities in Africa and Asia) project held its final partner meeting on 8-9 May, 2019 at the University of Zimbabwe, to discuss final outputs and reports for the project. Partners were also given a tour of the facilities at the University of Zimbabwe and met with a number of academics including the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Dr Oswell Hapanyengwi.

SUEUAA team shares insights with City of Harare officials

In advance of the SUEUAA conference hosted by the University of Zimbabwe which took place 9-10 May, the team involved in the research were delighted to explore their findings with Eng. Hosiah Chisango, Town Clerk of the City of Harare.

News from PASCAL Africa

The Centre for Local Economic Development (CENLED) is a centre in the School of Economics (SE) within the College of Business and Economics (CBE) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). CENLED was established in 2008, primarily for capacity building in the local economic development (LED) fields. CENLED also hosts the PASCAL International Observatory (Africa) headquarters.

This paper, La contribución de las universidades al desarrollo económico y social, recently published as a blog item from Fundación CYD, Spain, may be of interest to subscribers involved with the contribution of universities to cities and regions; an area that PASCAL itself still works in in various ways including in our work with global south partners in SUEUAA and the work we highlighted last week in Taiwan, which is part of a larger project in Hong Kong, Scotland and Italy.

PASCAL assesses community engagement at Yuanpei University of Medical Technology, Taiwan

Since November 2018, Datong Community College (DCC) in Taipei City, Taiwan, and Yuanpei University of Medical Technology (YUMT) in nearby Hsinchu City, have carried out an assessment of the contribution of the university to regional development in the field of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Yuanpei University of Medical Technology firstly used the "How good is your community?” benchmarking evaluation toolkit provided by PASCAL to conduct self-assessment in each of eight domains of engagement.

PASCAL delegation welcomed in Taiwan

PASCAL was delighted to be hosted on March 11th by the Speaker of Hsinchu City Council in Taiwan, Hsiu-Jui Hsu at his offices. Professors Michael Osborne and Roberta Piazza were able to discuss the outcomes of a recent study, using PASCAL tools, led by Eugenia Chang, Principal of Datong Community College and Marten Ma of Yuanpei, University of Medical Technology concerning the contribution of that university to the development of the city.

Benchmarking regional engagement in Taiwan

In November 2018, Vice President Dr. Roland Tsai and Chief Officer of International and Cross-Strait Affairs Dr. Hsiao-Ling Huang, both of Yuanpei University of Medical Technology (YUMT), met with President Eugenia Chang of Datong Community College of Taipei City to initiate our assessment of practice of regional and community engagement.
