Since our last newsletter, we've been busy publishing evidence and preparing our final project outputs, as the project formally comes to an end. In this newsletter – our first of 2016 – we are delighted to report on several developments that demonstrate the growth and dynamism of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC).
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced leader to blend public, private, and philanthropic financial resources in new ways to better meet the needs of cities and improve the lives of low-income people.
Organized by the Ministry of Economic Development of Italy, the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), this Forum aims to: analyze and discuss the concept of smart sustainable cities; map current national and international initiatives on this topic; identify key challenges and opportunities; examine various standards, indicators and methodologies for assessing the performance of cities; and discuss the potential of smart sustainable cities for bolstering the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The sixth in an international series of relevant discussions on the Learning Cities Networks (LCN) Inclusion theme has been conducted in Brisbane, Australia. The topic was "Seniors as Lifelong Learners" and follows on from the recent "Gender Equity" forum run in Modi'in, Israel. On 4th February, 2016, Sherwan Taha Ameen, PASCAL coordinator in Iraqi Kurdistan, organised an open seminar about PASCAL International Observatory and the 13th PASCAL International Conference in Glasgow, taking place 3-5 June, 2016 in preparation for this Conference as 6 delegates will attend the conference from Duhok city.
The list of 20 smart cities out of the 98 shortlisted for the ‘Smart Cities Mission’ was released by the Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, with Bhubaneswar topping the list and Pune and Jaipur coming in second and third respectively. These 20 cities will be the first to receive funds, thus kick-starting the process of developing them into ‘smart cities’. The next two years will see the inclusion of 40 and 38 cities, respectively.
