Making Learning Happen - a report on the PASCAL event held at UCL, 4 May, 2018

The PASCAL seminar, “Making Learning Happen,” was well-attended by some 30 delegates from across Europe on 4 May 2018.  Thanks to kind generosity of LLAKEs (http://www.llakes.ac.uk) and its head, Professor Andy Green, we convened in a room at the UCL Institute of Education.  The seminar provided an opportunity for associates and key contacts - new faces and old friends - to discuss learning in cities and metro-regions and their links to rural hinterlands, and to shape future PASCAL work in Europe.

European Universities move towards publishing a report on cultural diversity in higher education

The European University Continuing Education ( EUCEN) network has launched a consultation in Brussels on how to integrate cultural diversity into higher education. Rob Mark, PASCAL Learning Cities Coordinator, was invited to join a group of experts from 18 countries to discuss issues raised in two preliminary reports.

PASCAL Board member Peter Kearns honored by the Lord Mayor of Cork

Recently, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Tony Fitzgerald, invited PASCAL Board member Peter Kearns OAM FACE, to a civic reception at which he presented Peter with a citation for his contribution towards Cork as a lifelong learning city and their UNESCO 3rd International  Conference on Learning Cities in 2016. 

Faith / Spirituality-based Learning Cities Development Network Highlights for 2016 - 2018

The Faith / Spirituality-based Learning City Development Network has been growing since our beginnings in 2016. After the PASCAL International Observatory Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, Dr. Rob Mark (PASCAL LCN Director), Dr. Connie Watson (LearnLong Institute of Education and Learning Research), and Dr. Maria Liu Wong (LearnLong / City Seminary of New York) convened the first meeting for interested parties in July 2016 at City Seminary of New York (New York City).

Overstretched Cities

PASCAL subscribers may be interested in a recent series on 'Overstretched Cities' published by the Guardian newspaper in the UK. The series looks at cities across every continent. One of the blogs includes a short profile on Kigali one of the case study cities within the GCRF Centre for Sustainable Healthy Learning Cities and Neighbourhoods of which I'm Senior Business Manager.

The 2018 International Healthy Cities Conference takes place in Belfast from 1- 4 October 2018, and also marks thirty years of the Network and the global Healthy Cities movement. The Conference presents the opportunity to learn from the work of healthy cities globally. It attracts politicians and key decision-makers from within cities, as well as technical experts.

Vison Sofia

The long term development strategy for Sofia and the region is an initiative of the Sofia Municipality, which started at the end of 2016 with the objective of creating a system of interaction, and analysis of the current condition of Sofia.

Al Wakra Municipality – Local Action on the UN Sustainability Goals

A series of activities and speeches were held at three secondary schools in Al Wakra on 13 March 2018 to inform students about the UN Sustainability Goals, especially Sustainability Goal 4.
