In early 2014, the Future Cities Catapult, the UK’s government-backed urban innovation centre, commissioned the Urban Systems Laboratory at Imperial College London to outline the range of research currently underway in UK universities that connected with cities.

Sustainia 100 reports

A useful source of innovations that often involve entrepreneurial action may be found in the annual Sustainia 100 reports. These reports give 100 selected innovations across 10 sectors. The sectors are cities, energy, food, IT, education, health, resources etc. There are 10 selected innovations in each sector. Browsing these you may find good examples of entrepreneurial action you can follow up on.

Cultural Planning Forums Across Victoria: second and third forums – June/July 2014

The Cultural Planning Forums in Victoria may be of interest to PASCAL subscribers and especially the network within the Learning Cities Network (LCN) concerned with Harnessing Cultural Policies in Building Sustainable Learning Cities.

The forums are presented by the Cultural Development Network (CDN) in collaboration with the Arts and Cultural Committee, Municipal Association of Victoria, and the Melbourne City Council, Corangamite Shire Council, Gannawarra Shire Council, Mitchell Shire Council and Latrobe City Council.

Iowa State researchers return to communities to assess small town quality of life

Time has changed many of Iowa’s rural communities. Strengthening these towns starts with understanding how social capital and leadership influence development in a small town. A group of Iowa State University researchers has tracked changes in quality of life and social capital in 99 Iowa towns since 1994. This month, they begin a third, two-year study to determine if the changes have continued.

EcCoWellKEY AIM: This Network will develop holistic and integrated approaches and practice in learning city development, based on the work already undertaken in the PIE and Networks programmes interacting across silos.

Entrepreneurial Learning Cities Brief

Context & background

The network  title is  "Entrepreneurial Learning City Regions".

“A learning city can be characterised as one in which communities attempt to learn collectively to change their own futures.”(1)  Drawing on recent research on developing learning cities and on developing entrepreneurial skills and attitudes, we will develop guidelines for creating “Entrepreneurial Learning City Regions”.
