In early 2014, the Future Cities Catapult, the UK’s government-backed urban innovation centre, commissioned the Urban Systems Laboratory at Imperial College London to outline the range of research currently underway in UK universities that connected with cities.
A useful source of innovations that often involve entrepreneurial action may be found in the annual Sustainia 100 reports. These reports give 100 selected innovations across 10 sectors. The sectors are cities, energy, food, IT, education, health, resources etc. There are 10 selected innovations in each sector. Browsing these you may find good examples of entrepreneurial action you can follow up on.
The Cultural Planning Forums in Victoria may be of interest to PASCAL subscribers and especially the network within the Learning Cities Network (LCN) concerned with Harnessing Cultural Policies in Building Sustainable Learning Cities.
The forums are presented by the Cultural Development Network (CDN) in collaboration with the Arts and Cultural Committee, Municipal Association of Victoria, and the Melbourne City Council, Corangamite Shire Council, Gannawarra Shire Council, Mitchell Shire Council and Latrobe City Council.
I am a coordinator of Taipei Learning City and I have written a number of articles about the Learning City during the past three years. The attachment in this email is a list of articles that can be found at the Taipei Learning City website.
Time has changed many of Iowa’s rural communities. Strengthening these towns starts with understanding how social capital and leadership influence development in a small town. A group of Iowa State University researchers has tracked changes in quality of life and social capital in 99 Iowa towns since 1994. This month, they begin a third, two-year study to determine if the changes have continued.
The network will consider ways in which cities can plays roles in providing access through formal, non-formal and informal learning to greater opportunity. Access and social justice are important fields of the endeavour and the network will seek to explore ways in which learning cities can be developed so as to benefit all sections of the community.
KEY AIM: This network will combine rich museum theory with innovative field-based practices in world-leading museum and heritage sites in order to address a recognised pan-European need for more informed, strategic and entrepreneurial professionals within the sector.
KEY AIM: This network will examine the distinctive learning needs of rural, and remote communities to find ways in which learning city initiatives and linkages to urban communities can support learning development and sustainable community building, that addresses the particularity of smaller places.
KEY AIM: This Network will develop holistic and integrated approaches and practice in learning city development, based on the work already undertaken in the PIE and Networks programmes interacting across silos.
The network title is "Entrepreneurial Learning City Regions".
“A learning city can be characterised as one in which communities attempt to learn collectively to change their own futures.”(1) Drawing on recent research on developing learning cities and on developing entrepreneurial skills and attitudes, we will develop guidelines for creating “Entrepreneurial Learning City Regions”.
