We are pleased to share with you this issue of our newsletter. 2016 was a fruitful and inspiring year for the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. We have seen the network grow to more than 175 member cities, drawn from more than 40 countries. We would like to take the opportunity to warmly welcome all the new members that have joined us in recent months. Many were able to attend the first ever Members’ Meeting of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC), hosted by the city of Hangzhou in China, on 15 and 16 November. This represented another major milestone in our work.

In this issue’s Focus section, we are pleased to share insight from the Mayor of Hangzhou on the good practice and achievements that Hangzhou has made in building a learning city. Hangzhou is not the only member of the network to have been actively engaged in strengthening cooperation in building learning cities. On the other side of the world, Larissa held its second conference on learning cities while Espoo hosted its first learning city festival. As part of the festival, Espoo also organized a conference with several other cities in Europe with the aim of establishing a partnership of learning cities. In addition, four scholars visited the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning to conduct research on implementing learning cities in China, Egypt Russia and Ukraine. It has been rewarding to see such developments.

We are also pleased to share the dates for our flagship event for 2017:  the third International Conference on Learning Cities (ICLC). This conference, which is hosted by the city of Cork in Ireland, will take place from 18 to 20 September 2017. We will share more detailed information in the near future and encourage you to save those dates in your calendar.
