Comments from Learning Limerick for the 'Connecting Urban and Rural Learning Initiatives’ Learning Network
Attached a short discussion piece for the ‘Connecting Urban and Rural Learning Initiatives’ Learning Network – compiled by Yvonne Lane, Lifelong Learning Facilitator, Limerick Learning Region with input from the Learning Limerick Steering Group; particularly from the County Limerick representatives on that group.
The ‘Learning Limerick’ Group has now expanded its membership to include partners from across the wider Limerick Region – from both Limerick City and County. This was a natural progression during late 2013 and early 2014; following the amalgamation of Limerick City and County Councils into a single structure; similarly with the merged Limerick Clare Education and Training Board (ETB, formerly separate Vocational Education Committees in Limerick City, County and County Clare.) Our County Limerick partners have also been actively involved in organising and hosting events as part of our annual Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival since 2012.

response to Limerick discussion piece
From an African perspective the issues raised in the Limerick discussion problem appear to be not so very different from those experienced in rural Africa. But the scale of the problem is much more acute in terms of infrastructure, levels of education, poverty, failure to engage with local knowledge systems etc. Moreover implementation of policy actions is less predictable in relation to development plans. There are also, in terms of communication, often cultural traditions and languages that need to be negotiated in order to facilitate engagement. There will be a short analysis of issues and possibilities within African contexts which we will present soon.
