University leaders commit to transforming higher education institutions into lifelong learning agents

Higher education institutions (HEIs) must evolve into agents for lifelong learning with the help of innovative institutional strategies – this was the key message of a recent international conference organized by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) and Shanghai Open University (SOU), ‘Promoting lifelong learning in higher education: From institutional strategies to practical implementation’. Held in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, from 19 to 21 October 2023, the conference welcomed over 250 participants, including university leaders, policy-makers, higher education experts, scholars and researchers, from China and abroad.

Special Issue of PIMA Bulletin - Climate Justice Education- November 2023

A new PIMA (PASCAL International Members Association) Bulletin on Climate Justice Education is now published. This Bulletin grew out of the conversations within the PIMA Bulletin Number 48, January 2023 January 2023 Bulletin TOC | PIMA Network where we began to (re)envision relations between humans and the more-than-human world from different vantage points.

PASCAL Asia-Pacific Center launched

UP Diliman (UPD) recently launched the PASCAL Regional Centre for Asia-Pacific, to be housed at the UPD School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP).

"We are confident that this collaboration will trigger innovation in education, research, and public service in the 21st century given the challenges of a volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous world."

SURP Dean Dina C. Magnaye said.

Swansea University and PASCAL International Observatory collaborate to host Leverhulme Lecture on Islamic pedagogical capabilities for learning cities

On Thursday, 19th October 2023, Swansea University hosted a Leverhulme Lecture titled “Pedagogical Capabilities in Islam to Create, Maintain and Develop Justice-oriented Learning Cities”. The lecture was presented by Nematollah Azizi, a Leverhulme Professor at the University of Glasgow and a faculty member at the University of Kurdistan in Iran. This visit was organized by Swansea University, along the International PASCAL Observatory collaboration, where Swansea Learning City and Swansea University are active members and were happy to host Professor Azizi as their guest from their partner University of Glasgow.  The lecture by Professor Azizi aimed to explore the role of Islamic pedagogical capabilities in creating and maintaining justice-oriented learning cities.

Community school organises first learning city conference and festival in Otelu Rosu, Romania

Banatean High School, Otelu Rosu, in Western Romania, Timisoara region, was the focus of a week of activities in October 2023 around the theme of learning cities and regions. The event is part of a wider ‘Schools for Learning Cities’ project involving other cities in Nocera, Umbria (Italy), Alcora (Spain), Platon (Greece) and Modiin (Israel).  The programme included a 2-day conference entitled ‘Log into the Future’ with the key themes being sustainability, digitalisation, and social inclusion.

International Conference on Promoting Lifelong Learning in Higher Education - Shanghai 19-21 October 2023

We are very pleased that Associate Director for PASCAL in Europe Professor Roberta Piazza, University of Catania, was able to contribute on our behalf to the International Conference on Promoting Lifelong Learning in Higher Education: From institutional strategies to practical implementation held in Shanghai from 19-21 October 2023 organised by Shanghai Open University and UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning.
