Being human in the era of the fourth industrial revolution and AI

The recent PASCAL and PIMA report on Good Active Ageing, which I edited with Denise Reghenzani Kearns, discussed the implications of the convergence of the demographic and technological revolutions. The demographic revolution with ageing populations is occurring at a time when revolutionary changes in digital technologies associated with artificial intelligence, robotics and biotechnologies are impacting on society with this impact certain to increase. How soon superintelligence arrives is a matter of lively discussion.

Rethinking EcCoWell: In the Context of Sustainable Development Goals

This paper reviews the experience of the EcCoWell concept which was developed by PASCAL in 2012 as an approach to holistic and integrated development of learning cities.

The conclusions and recommendations of the paper were approved by the PASCAL Board in November 2017 and are now serving as the basis for implementing EcCoWell 2 as a refinement of the EcCoWell concept relevant to progressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals in towns and cities. 

Review of EcCoWell Approach to Learning Cities

The PASCAL Board has asked Peter Kearns, the founder of the EcCoWell approach to learning city development, to undertake a review of progress in implementing the idea since 1992 and to report to the Board by the end of this year. The summary below provides background on the EcCoWell idea and presents some questions where I would welcome comment.

Upcoming Springer publication on Entrepreneurial Learning City Regions

The Springer publication on “Entrepreneurial Learning City Regions” is in final stages of editing and should be available soon. The book has been edited by Judith James and Jean Preece (Swansea) and Raul Valdes-Cotera (UIL) and so represents a nice example of PASCAL and UIL collaboration.

Taipei and Cork Learning Neighbourhoods pilots

A worthwhile outcome of the PASCAL International - Learning Cities 2040 gathering, was the exchange between Taipei and Cork on their Learning Neighbourhoods pilots. 

PASCAL 2016 Conference - Learning City Showcase Profiles

An ambitious program within the 2016 PASCAL International Conference: Learning Cities 2040, was the collation of the 17 Learning City Showcase Profiles developed by delegate teams participating from Asia (Beijing, Taipei, Erbil, Modi'in, Duhok, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Asia-Europe (Sino-German Initiative [Essen & Changzhou]), Europe (Cork, Bristol, Glasgow, Swansea Bay City Region, Limerick, Karlstad, Pécs, Acireale, Arbroath), and Oceania (Australian Learning Communities Network).

Queensland as an Age -friendly community

Thye Queensland Government has now released its Action Plan for the development of Queensland as an Age-friendly Coimmunity. This vfollows consultations onthis subject and the release previously of a Strategic Directions document.

The Party for Public Spaces enters presidential race

A Party for Public Spaces has entered the Presidential race in America. In announcing this initiative, the CEO PPS Fred Kent said that he could no longer stand the ceaseless consatruction of faceless skyscrapers in his neighbourhood of midtown Manhattan in New York. Placemaking as learning is a theme being brought to the Showcase presentations at the PASCAL Glasgow conference in June with a Showcase presentation on the Scottish city of Abroath. Placemaking is an important theme in learning city development.

 

Queensland Seniors Strategy

The Queensland Government is currently developing a Seniors Strategy for Queensland as an aspect of developing Queensland as an "Age-friendly Community".

PASCAL is following up on the workshop on Seniors as Lifelong Learners" held in Melboutne last November by holding a symposium on the same subject in Brisbane on 23 March on the same subject in partnershop with the State Library of Queensland, Australian College of Educators, University of the Third Age, and Mens Sheds. Discussions are proceeding and other joint sponsors may be added.

Learning Neighbourhoods Pilot Projects in Cork

The Cork Learning City has reported good progres in the two Learning Neighbourhood pilot projects being undertaken in Cork. The concept of Learning Neigybourhoods came out of the experience of PIE as a strategy to bring learning city development down to local streets and neighbourhoods. Pilot projects are being conducted in Cork and Taipei

The Cork projects are being undertaken with the support of University Follege Cork which has provided financial and human resources.  A city wide steering group provides advice.
