Taipei Learning Neighbourhood pilots

Last Friday I reported an initiative by Cork to conduct two Learning Neighbourhood pilot projects in neighbourhoods with considerable disadvantage. Cork has now been joined by the Taipei Learning City which will also conduct two Learning Neighbourhood pilot projects over the coming year.

Cork Learning Neighbourhoods pilots

One of the main lessons from the PASCAL PIE program which ran from 2011 to 2013 was the significance of local neighbourhoods in building inclusive loearning cities. This impact was seen particularly in Beijing and Shanghai where the learning city initiatives reached down through city and administrative district levels to local neighbourhoods where the roles of community colleges and centres was particularly important. The important research role encouraged innovations such as the eco-village project in Shanghai.

UNESCO Hangzhou Declaration on Placing Culture at the Heart of Sustainable Development Policies

The United Nations will consider later this year the new Sustainabable Development Goals to rep-lace the existing Millenium Development Goals. In this context there has been a lively debate on whether culture should be included in these goals.

PASCAL welcomes Bristol to Learning Cities Networks

PASCAL welcomes Bristol to Networks as a participant in the Inclusion and Entrepreneurial Learning Cities Networks. Bristol recently took steps to develop as a learning city and has established a high level Partnership Board which will hold its first meeting shortly.

The world's most livable cities

A survey of the worl's most livable cities has been released by the lifestyle magazine Monocle. The survey wighs factors such as urban design, public transportation, access to nature, safety, international connectivity.

The surprising thing about the top 10 cities (1 Copenhagen, 2 Tokyo, 3 Melbourne, 4 Stockholm,5 Helsinki, 6 Vienna,7 Zurich, 8 Munich,9 Kyoto, 10 Fukuola) is the mix of small and large cities, with small cities such as Copenhagen and Zurich joing a very large city such as Tokyo and a mix of medium sized cities such as Vienna, Kyota, and Melbourne.

Innovation in Europe's cities

Innovations in a range of 155 cities across Europe has been highlighted in submissions made by these cities to the 2014 Mayors Challenge, an initiative sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropies following a similar competition in America.. The competition led to Barcelona declared the winner with Stockholm, Warsaw, Athens and Kirklees runners up.

BMBF Science Year - Future of Cities

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has selected the "Future of Cities" as the subject for the 2015 Science Year. Important subjects such as this have been selected for past Science Years. Examples include "Project Earth: Our Future" (2012), "The Demographic Opportunity" (2013), "Science as Diplomacy of Trust" (2011).

Persistent poverty Lost in place

A report on the CityObservatory web site (cityobservatory.org) provides data on the number of poor people living in "high poverty" urban neighbourhoods between 1970 and 2010 in America.The study shows that the number of poor people in these neighbourhhoods has more than doubled in this period from two million to four million, while the number of such high-poverty neighbourhoods in cities has nearly tripled from 1,100 to 3,100.
