The Talloires Network E-Newsletter - December 2020

The Talloires Network of Engaged Universities is a global coalition of institutions collaborating with communities and partners to confront societal challenges such as disease, famine, structural racism, gender oppression, economic inequality, and climate change. We support university civic engagement in all its forms including community-based research, applied research, service-learning, extension, volunteerism, public service, policymaking, political activism, and social entrepreneurship. Though 2020 has been a challenging year for all of us, we are constantly invigorated by our members who are taking action, providing opportunity, and offering hope.

It is a tremendous honor to present to you an impressive slate of candidates to stand for election. The Talloires Network Steering Committee has several open seats for new Steering Committee members. This is an exciting opportunity to bring new energy and perspectives to the leadership of the Network. We invite your university to vote by 21 December 2020. The newly-elected Steering Committee members will begin their 3-year terms on 1 January 2021. Please also join me in thanking outgoing Steering Committee members Sara Ladrón de Guevara, Lorraine McIlrath, Andrew Petter, and Andrew Vann. Each has completed two-terms of service and we are deeply grateful for their generous contributions.

We are very pleased to recognize the importance of young leaders by offering the Next Generation Leaders Program in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. The Program will engage 40 undergraduate and graduate students from around the world in topics such as pandemic recovery and resilience, innovations in gender equity, structured listening methods, and civic engagement futures. Each month, they will meet virtually to exchange ideas and strategies; they will play a major role in shaping the Tallories Network Leaders Conference 2021 (TNLC2021).

The Local Organizing Committee is currently taking into account the risks associated with a large international gathering and exploring several scenarios for TNLC2021. Regardless of the conference format (in-person, hybrid, or virtual), we are committed to designing and implementing a movement-building event. We welcome your suggestions as we adapt the program, build momentum, and plan our next global conference. In January, we will issue a survey to collect input from our full membership.

I wish all of you good health and joyful end-of-year celebrations.

Sincerely,

Anthony P. Monaco
President, Tufts University
