The economic, social and environmental challenges facing regional Australia are serious and require innovative, transformative policy responses. However, regional policy in Australia is typically ad hoc and fragmented, offering limited support to regional communities. By way of contrast, the EU has developed its Regional Policy as a comprehensive program over the past 40 years.

This event examines the potential of linking economic and socio-ecological innovation policy, and its implications for place-based innovation systems that enhance sustainability.

We welcome two key leaders in the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, Dr Mikel Landabaso, Director of Growth and Innovation, and Alessandro Rainoldi, Head of Unit, Territorial Development, who will talk about global and European approaches to regional development and innovation for sustainability.
