The EU Centre at RMIT and the Contemporary European Studies Association of Australia (CESAA) invite you to come celebrate Europe Day 2019.

Europe Day 2019 offers an opportunity to celebrate various aspects of the European Union (EU) in a context of great change. If there were not sufficient economic, social, cultural, political and environmental uncertainties already, the transition within the EU institutions adds another significant dimension to the processes of change. Elections for the European Parliament, new Presidents for the European Commission and the European Council, and a new High Representative together mean a very important new leadership for the EU. What are some of the key challenges for this new leadership? How might they respond?

Dr Chiara De Lazzari and Dr Emma Shortis, two early career researchers, will lead the conversation on the ways the EU is responding to challenges facing the Europe in the global context.

Speakers:

Dr Chiara De Lazzari completed her PhD in Politics at Swinburne University of Technology on transnational politics and dual citizenship rights. She holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from University for Foreigners in Perugia, Italy, and she currently works as a Teaching Associate in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne and Monash University. She has published in the area of migration studies and citizenship rights. Her new book titled 'Transnational Politics, Citizenship and Elections -The Political Engagement of Transnational Communities in National Elections' published by Routledge (Taylor and Francis)  will be available in late 2019. 

Dr Emma Shortis is a Research Officer at the EU Centre and a member of the Social and Global Studies Centre at RMIT University. Emma recently completed her PhD in History at the University of Melbourne. Emma’s research interests include global environmental governance, environmental history and diplomacy, and the relationship between history and climate change adaptation. In 2017-18, Emma was a Fox-Zucker International Fellow at Yale University. Emma holds a Master’s Degree in International and European Studies from Monash University, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne.
