Please join me for the free premiere of our documentary Cuba & COVID-19: Public Health, Science & Solidarity which will be screened at 6pm on Wednesday 11th November as part of the ESRC’s Festival of Social Science.

A global pandemic in a globalised world. Over one million people have died. What could we have done differently to save lives & livelihoods? In search of collective solutions and best practice, Dr Helen Yaffe (University of Glasgow) and Dr Valia Rodriguez (University of Aston) look to Cuba for valuable lessons.

By reacting decisively, mobilising its extensive public healthcare system and state-owned biotech sector, Cuba has kept contagion and fatalities down (130 total deaths) and initiated clinical trials for COVID-19 specific treatments and vaccine. They have also treated patients and saved lives overseas.

We interview top Cuban biotech scientists producing treatments, vaccines and equipment for Cuba's COVID-19 effort, a family of survivors, a family doctor and medical student involved with active door-to-door screening, a member of the Henry Reeve medical contingent which went to Lombardy, Italy when it was the epicentre of the pandemic to treat patients there. And more…
