A Community Society - Glebe

Glebe is a suburb of Sydney (Australia) that fringes the harbour.  For over 50 years a community body, The Glebe Society, has joined together to advance: Community · Environment · Heritage.  The membership committee initiates a range of activities to engage, reveal and celebrate the uniqueness of this area.

Community leadership is at the forefront with the community activism of older residents documented in video vignettes by the University of Sydney.  Working groups and sub-committees oversee special interests such as: Bays & Foreshores, Blue Wrens (bushcare, flora, fauna, biodiversity & environment), Heritage, Local History, Communications & Bulletin, Planning, Transport & Traffic, Glebe Voices and “Thirsty Thursdays”.

An annual Glebe Community Festival, Guest Talks to Artists’ Markets also feature as initiatives. This body looks to the future in maintaining a cohesive, community amenity through action.  In this suburb, an exciting development was the refurbishment of the 1904 Tram Sheds Depot that now provides meeting places, shopping and dining.
