The Anglosphere was one of the surprise winners of the 2016 Referendum campaign.  As an explicitly stated concept it appeared early on in the campaign but soon faded from view.  But where it did play a part in the campaign was less as a unitary concept but more in its constituent parts: sometimes as an example to emulate and at other times as another layer of global interference to reject.

Freedom of movement, which embodies a humanistic ideal about the potential of individuals to learn and take initiative, is essential in a knowledge-based, post-industrial society.  The debate over freedom of movement highlights the flaws in BREXIT based on a fundamental misunderstanding of “laissez-faire” which Walter Lippmann, in The Great Society, exposed in 1937.

Crises have occurred regularly in the history of European political integration. The crisis that the European Union (EU) has been traversing since 2010 is, however, its deepest, most intractable and most protracted. The uniquely high level and scope of political integration that has developed in Europe over the last 60 years is primarily attributable to the strong support that successive German governments have given to his process. Whether, how and to what extent the EU survives the current crisis is therefore likely to depend heavily on the orientation of German European policy.
