Does internationlisation mean the same as globalisation?  How is local culure compromised or enhanced by an emphasis on international education?  How is difference configured into an international social, cultural, economic and eudcational agenda?  Is the idea of social justice subservient to economic considerations in internationalisation discourse?  These and other related questions will be explored throughout this 2008 Conference.  For further details please visit: http://www.baice.ac.uk/events/forthcoming_events.shtml

About the Conference

The conference focuses on the possible contribution of towns to rural development by acting as a place of knowledge creation and diffusion in order to avoid processes of decline and promote a geographically balanced and sustainable development in rural areas. An important question related to this is how to take advantage of the potential of towns and rural areas and how to increase their competitiveness, encouraging their advantages over more urbanized areas. Important issues are for example the challenges created by learning and knowledge diffusion in towns and rural areas, the potential of towns in bottom-up policies such as the Leader+ approach, the importance of knowledge in rural areas and the function of towns in rural-urban (knowledge) networks.

Biography, memory, narrative and knowledge are very crucial issues in the field of education, in the study and experiences of lifewide and lifelong learning, and in adult life as a whole. They are studied as objects, processes or focuses, that enable us to understand the way people learn, the choices they make (including how these may be structured), the role and nature of story, and how they make sense of and compose meaning in their lives (as well as our own). They are the main focus of our research. Auto/biographic and life history approaches are the common ground for the ESREA network on Life History and Biographical Research.

This conference will bring together academic researchers, teachers and administrators as well as practitioners, professionals, policy analysts and makers in order to explore and showcase research and practice of what in North America is called ‘Service to the Community’. Although newly discovered by some universities, service to the community has a long tradition in others and, in many cases, is recognized as an explicit mandate in the university charter. Service is understood to be the third mission of universities, alongside Teaching and Research. Service and community engagement takes many different forms. Examples are community-based research and learning, assistance in regional development, continuing and community education, technology transfer, and other forms of knowledge sharing and cooperation.
