The EU Digital Single Market (DSM), launched in May 2015, is the strategy of the European Commission to ensure cross-border access to online activities for individuals and businesses in Europe under conditions of fair competition, consumer and data protection, updated copyright rules, and the removal geo-blocking.

This seminar will focus on the progress in implementing the EU DSM (including the General Data Protection Regulation) and its implications for EU-Australia ICT cooperation, especially in research and innovation. Some consideration will also be given to implications for Australian e-trade and the the current negotiations for the EU-Australia Free Trade Agreement.

Speakers

Erich Prem is a technology and research consultant in the area of ICT research. Erich holds a Dr. techn. (Computer Science) from Vienna University of Technology, Dr. phil. (Philosohpy), University of Vienna, Dipl.Ing. (Computer science), Vienna University of Technology, and MBA (General Management), Donau Universität Krems.

Erich is Founder and Director of eutema, a technology and RTD strategy consultancy based in Vienna, Austria.  Erich is also Coordinator of the EPIC Project (https://epicproject.eu/), Europe's ICT partnership with Australia, Singapore and New Zealand.

A representative from DFAT will also be available for comment on the implications for Australian e-trade and the Australia FTA.
