European Universities and Knowledge Alliances in their territorial innovation ecosystems

To get a sense of the European Commission’s perspective on the contribution of HEI’s to developing regional innovations systems, the attached report on ‘European Universities and Knowledge Alliances in their territorial innovation ecosystems’, may be enlightening. At the University of Glasgow, we are part of one of the Alliances, CIVIS, and I am grateful to colleagues in the that alliance for making me aware of this report, and supplying the summary below:

As discussed in previous postings, the U.S. is beginning to experience the early stages of a new form of domestic migration, i.e. domestic climate migration.  Despite the lack of systematic quantitative data on this new pattern of movement, the growing amount of anecdotal evidence has created a network of urban policy researchers who are exploring the topic.

Currently, half of the world population resides in cities, with this figure projected to rise until 2050. The health and well-being of residents in cities is negatively affected by a lack of opportunities for physical activity, exposure to high levels of outdoor air pollution, and rising temperatures more acutely felt cities. Cities are also a key contributor to global warming, consuming two-thirds of the world’s energy and producing over 70% of all CO2 emissions.
